Certain types of building works are subject to notification to the local Building Control or through an approved contractor who is a member of a recognised competent-person scheme such as NAPIT. Members who are involved in the following sectors can self-certify their own works: electrical, heating, plumbing, ventilation, air conditioning, microgeneration and building fabric trades. This saves customers’ time and money which is normally involved by notifying Building Control directly.

Electrical work in a domestic dwelling is covered by the Building Regulations, in particular approved document P is also known as Part P. This approved document states that all electrical works must comply with all the relevant parts of the building regulations.

The following approved documents contain information relevant to an electrical installation within a dwelling but are not limited to.

Part A Structure
Part B Fire safety
Part C Site preparation
Part E Resistance to the passage of sound
Part F Ventilation
Part L Conservation of fuel and power
Part M Access to, and use of, buildings

Mytradefinder encourages all its traders to become accredited with industry recognised associations, such as NAPIT. This helps raise standards, improve customer service and promotes best practices.
